The key role of recycled wood in the particleboard production industry

The thesis was born with the goal of analysing the environmental benefits of SAIB and the Italian particleboard industry. The thesis will be divided into several sections: initially, an introduction to the SAIB company will be presented, including its history, key performance indicators and strategies adopted to address environmental challenges. Subsequently, the production process of particle board will be examined, with a focus on the difference between the use of virgin and recycled wood. Then the evaluation of the performance with the drafting of the 2023 sustainability report in order to quantify the greenhouse gas emissions in terms of scope 1, scope 2 and scope 3. In conclusion the overall positive impact of SAIB will be computed where it will be assumed that, whether SAIB doesn’t operate, all the recovered wood should be burned, and the same amount of wood should be replaced by virgin wood. In the same way, considering the main actors in the Italian particle board field, a general overview of the sector impact will be provided.

La tesi nasce con l'obiettivo di analizzare i benefici ambientali di SAIB e dell'industria italiana dei pannelli truciolari. Sarà suddivisa in diverse sezioni: inizialmente, verrà presentata un'introduzione di SAIB, tra cui la sua storia, gli indicatori chiave delle prestazioni e le strategie adottate per affrontare le sfide ambientali. Successivamente, verrà esaminato il processo di produzione dei pannelli con particolare attenzione alla differenza tra l'uso di legno vergine e riciclato. Successivamente, la valutazione delle prestazioni con la stesura del bilancio di sostenibilità del 2023 al fine di quantificare le emissioni di gas a effetto serra in termini di scope 1, scope 2 e scope 3. In conclusione, l'impatto positivo complessivo di SAIB sarà calcolato laddove si presume che, se SAIB non esistesse, tutto il legno recuperato dovrebbe essere bruciato e la stessa quantità di legno dovrebbe essere sostituita da legno vergine. Allo stesso modo, considerando i principali attori nel settore dei pannelli truciolari italiani, sarà fornita una panoramica generale dell'impatto settoriale.
