Over the past few decades, port cities in Europe have been affected by massive changes and transformation processes, passing from the industrial character, through disuse, and loss of value, to revitalization and redevelopment. Those redevelopment strategies usually have had the leading role in reimaging those urban areas, which for the most of time were being neglected and underused, into lively and inclusive, mixed-use post-industrial districts. Due to the fact, how the revitalized waterfronts directly affect the cities locally, and globally, as well as how usually they are the beginning for the revitalization of the city and catalyst for various types of urban development, makes waterfront transformations one of the most interesting phenomena of urban renewals. Currently, Europe is in the process of experiencing the migration of many manufacturing industries outside the port cities, leaving the existing waterfront space, that used to host various types of industrial production centers, to be completely abandoned. Those industrial ports often tend to occupy strategically important places in the heart of European cities, making them the most crucial areas of urgent urban renewal strategies. This is why, nowadays, for various port cities it is important to propose a waterfront transformation plan of existing architecture and urban fabric, in order to achieve a successful revival of inclusive, and accessible for all, waterfront space. This master thesis focuses on the case study of the port city located in the north of Poland, called Szczecin, and the area of the city’s shipyard. This area in Szczecin, throughout the years, has gone through disuse, and loss of a significant value, creating a large void in the city’s urban morphology. The objective of the thesis is to propose a transformation strategy for the entire masterplan of the shipyard, and its existing industrial halls, by implementing into the design the existing context, as well as the architectural character of the city.
Negli ultimi decenni, le città portuali in Europa sono state interessate da massicci cambiamenti e processi di trasformazione, passando dal carattere industriale, attraverso il disuso e la perdita di valore, alla rivitalizzazione e riqualificazione. Queste strategie di riqualificazione hanno solitamente avuto un ruolo guida nel reimmaginare quelle aree urbane, che per la maggior parte del tempo sono state trascurate e sottoutilizzate, in distretti postindustriali vivaci, inclusivi e ad uso misto. Il modo in cui i waterfront rivitalizzati influenzano direttamente le città a livello locale e globale, nonché il fatto che di solito rappresentano l’inizio della rivitalizzazione della città e il catalizzatore di vari tipi di sviluppo urbano, rende le trasformazioni del waterfront uno dei fenomeni più interessanti del rinnovamento urbano. Attualmente, l’Europa sta sperimentando la migrazione di molte industrie manifatturiere al di fuori delle città portuali, lasciando lo spazio esistente sul lungomare, che ospitava vari tipi di centri di produzione industriale, completamente abbandonato. Questi porti industriali tendono spesso ad occupare luoghi strategicamente importanti nel cuore delle città europee, rendendoli le aree più cruciali delle urgenti strategie di rinnovamento urbano. Questo è il motivo per cui, oggi, per diverse città portuali è importante proporre un piano di trasformazione del waterfront dell’architettura e del tessuto urbano esistente, al fine di ottenere un rilancio di successo dello spazio del lungomare inclusivo e accessibile a tutti. Questa tesi di master si concentra sul caso studio della città portuale situata nel nord della Polonia, chiamata Stettino, e sull’area del cantiere navale della città. Questa zona di Stettino, nel corso degli anni, ha vissuto un periodo di disuso e di perdita di valore significativo, creando un grande vuoto nella morfologia urbana della città. L'obiettivo della tesi è proporre una strategia di trasformazione per l'intero masterplan del cantiere navale e i suoi capannoni industriali esistenti, implementando nel progetto il contesto esistente, nonché il carattere architettonico della città.
