The content of the thesis concerns the relationship between Museums and Sustainability, as also explained in the title, and how this relationship can become increasingly frequent within museum structures. I chose to talk about this topic to bring together two aspects that may apparently seem distant, but which in reality, even in Italy, is taking up more and more space. Museums, now, do not only perform an exhibition and collection function of works, but more and more often the functions and activities inside and outside the structures are expanding and involving not only the internal contents of the exhibitions but also the issues relating to the territory, current events and changes. Over the years, museum themes are developing and working on different fronts; we are not just talking about what can be considered art museums but there are a series of museums and exhibition spaces that have as their themes the environment, the protection of the territory and the practices for understanding climate change. The challenge for all museums, regardless of their content and massage, is to be or become active from a sustainability point of view. The starting point was the meeting organized by ArtLab 2019 in collaboration with ICOM Italia regarding museums and their contribution to sustainability, from here I developed a series of research and concepts to describe and analyze a process for the development of a path sustainable within museums. The work was divided into several phases in order to try to understand and develop a discussion that could include both an analysis of awareness and interest on the topic, particularly on Italian territory, and a part of theoretical study on the topic with indications of practices for change, and finally a series of practical examples of museums that are contributing in a significant and committed way on the topic. At first I focused on understanding how the relationship between museums and sustainability is present and developed within the debates. An important part of this part of the work is provided by the contribution of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals. Within this agenda is the role of museums and the contribution they can provide to create and transform cities and communities to become more sustainable. This point denotes a clear interest, also on the part of the institutions, in wanting to encourage museums to contribute significantly to sustainability issues. In the second part of the work I chose to analyze the text "Museums for Integrated Sustainability" by Michela Rota which provides an enormous contribution to the topic. I chose to focus in the first part on the initial phases of the topic, which are necessary to understand how to begin a path of change. In the second part I analyzed the actions that museums should focus on to initiate sustainable practices within their structures and programs. The final part of the work focuses on the museums themselves which are active on the topic of sustainability. In this case I chose to analyze three examples of Italian museums, precisely because I believe that there are still few museum institutions that are committed to the topic, but at the same time there are some cases that continually work to bring about significant changes on the topic. The text, therefore, aims to provide a general vision of what can be defined as sustainable museums, through information present in texts and articles, comparisons and discussions on the topic and some examples present in the area; I tried to critically analyze the information reported to provide my point of view and comment on the topic.
