Local heritage in favor of the community: Church of S. Vittore e Quaranta Martiri, Milan, Italy

The thesis "Local heritage in favor of the community: The Church of San Vittore and Quaranta Martiri, Milan, Italy" builds a design experience based on the transformation of a small church from the early 20th century, oriented towards the reopening of the building to the public and its use as a community support center. The work begins by explaining the different ideological branches of contemporary Italian architectural restoration, illustrated based on the theorists and designers of the second half of the 20th century and today who led the debate that led to the construction of the thought structure on which current achievements in this field are based. It then overlaps these with contemporary experiences in the field, aiming to identify the theoretical and practical framework of the discipline. Subsequently, through an investigation of the church's history and a diagnostic evaluation of its physical condition, an intervention methodology is designed that aims at the preservation and enhancement of the property, and its consequent change of use destination, seeking above all the conservation of its symbolic and testimonial value, and the reconnection of the local population with the building. The thesis is the result of a joint effort between the Politecnico di Milano (Italy) and the University of Belgrano (Argentina) within the Double-Degree program.

La tesi "Patrimonio locale a favore della comunità: La Chiesa di San Vittore e dei Quaranta Martiri, Milano, Italia" sviluppa un'esperienza progettuale basata sulla trasformazione di una piccola chiesa dei primi anni del XX secolo, orientata alla riapertura dell'edificio al pubblico e al suo utilizzo come centro di supporto comunitario. Il lavoro inizia spiegando i diversi rami ideologici del restauro architettonico italiano contemporaneo, illustrati in base ai teorici e progettisti della seconda metà del XX secolo e a oggi, che hanno guidato il dibattito che ha portato alla costruzione della struttura di pensiero su cui si basano i risultati attuali in questo campo. Sovrapponendo queste basi con esperienze contemporanee nel settore, si mira a identificare il quadro teorico e pratico della disciplina. Successivamente, attraverso un'indagine sulla storia della chiesa e una valutazione diagnostica delle sue condizioni fisiche, viene progettata una metodologia di intervento che punta alla conservazione e valorizzazione dell'immobile, e al suo conseguente cambio di destinazione d'uso, cercando soprattutto di conservarne il valore simbolico e testimoniale, e di ricollegare la popolazione locale all'edificio. La tesi è il risultato di uno sforzo congiunto tra il Politecnico di Milano (Italia) e l'Università di Belgrano (Argentina) all'interno del programma Double-Degree.
