The primary objective of this thesis is to explore and propose solutions for improving the parks and abandoned dacha plots in Rostov-on-Don, Russia. The research analyzes the current state of these green spaces by examining both online sources and academic articles to assess their amenities and utilization. It identifies the challenges of underutilization and seeks theoretical approaches to revitalize these areas. The study addresses two main issues: 1. The neglect and later unusability of abandoned dacha plots by their owners. 2. The improper maintenance of park areas intended for pedestrian use, rendering them unsuitable for public enjoyment. The thesis proposes a division of park areas into “touched” and “untouched” zones. “Touched” areas are well-maintained, providing enjoyable walking paths and facilities, while 'untouched' areas are left to grow naturally, enhancing biodiversity and promoting a greener urban environment. An illustrative case study of the Solovinaya area is included to demonstrate these concepts in practice. Here, abandoned dacha plots are reimagined using the “pocket neighborhood” model, inspired by the communal lifestyle of the Cossacks. This design fosters a close-knit community with houses facing each other and shared communal spaces. Next to these dachas, a green "island" features a combination of well-kept passages and untouched land, allowing for natural growth without human interference. By integrating the Cossacks' historical communal lifestyle with modern urban design principles, this thesis contributes to the discourse on urban regeneration and community development in Rostov-on-Don and beyond.

Abstract
By integrating the Cossacks' historical communal lifestyle with modern urban design principles, this thesis contributes to the discourse on urban regeneration and community development in Rostov-on-Don and beyond.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
