This thesis investigates the integration of contemporary and historical urban relationships through the lens of collective landscapes, focusing on the concept of “bostan” in Istanbul. Bostans, traditional vegetable gardens, serve as the main theme to explore sustainable urban development, social interaction, and economic resilience within metropolitan contexts. The study aims to create a framework that preserves and revives the cultural heritage of Istanbul, while supporting inclusivity and sustainability through the design of collective urban spaces. The research employs a multiscale approach, with analysis and strategies on urban scale, design decisions on landscape scale, relationships and connections on architectural scale. This process is analyzing the interactions in the neighborhoods (mahalle in Turkish) and collective spaces to understand how these environments can serve community activities and support a circular economy strategy. By integrating local food production, processing the products, and attractive marketplace design; the project seeks to transform underutilized urban areas into productive and socially vibrant spaces. The methodology includes behavioral observations, demographic analysis, and interviews, combined with historical research to learn from the past and contextualize the significance of bostans. The thesis proposes that spaces with historical and cultural narratives stimulate community integration and identity construction, especially among vulnerable groups such as immigrants and women. The study’s findings emphasize the multifunctional and flexible role of bostans as thresholds (eşik in Turkish) that allow connections among diverse profiles. Ultimately, this thesis presents a masterplan for Fatih district of Istanbul, which suggests a balance between heritage preservation and modern urban strategies. The proposed design guide outlines sustainable development principles adapted to the local context, aiming to share the knowledge gained through the project, and to serve as a model for future urban projects. The masterplan emphasizes women labor enterprises, local food production and consumption, and cooperative workspaces where people can create their own culture, aiming to transform Istanbul’s collective landscapes into engines of social and economic integration.

Abstract
The masterplan emphasizes women labor enterprises, local food production and consumption, and cooperative workspaces where people can create their own culture, aiming to transform Istanbul’s collective landscapes into engines of social and economic integration.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
