The urgent need of moving away from the predominantly linear economic system in favour of a more sustainable and innovative business model has led the concept of the circular economy to assume increasing importance over time. The limits imposed by the scarcity of available resources on Earth directly impact the three dimensions of sustainability – environmental, economic, and social – making the current dynamics increasingly complex and challenging. In this context, the circular economy is configured as an innovative economic paradigm, based on business models of a transformative and systemic nature, such that it can satisfy the needs of economic and social development compatibly with the availability of resources on Earth. Consequently, circularity is as an approach capable of responding to the challenges of the present by transforming them into opportunities for innovation and change, which in the medium to long term contribute to increasing the competitiveness and resilience of systems. Rethinking business models from a circular perspective implies a collaborative approach, based on the active engagement of the community, which is necessary to abandon the linear model. It calls for a collective effort because – despite many factors foster the implementation of circular practices, among which efficiency and associated benefits stand out – the transition process is complex, and there are also many factors that hinder it, including the high investments required, the lack of know- how and of supporting policies. This thesis aims to provide a comprehensive framework of the outlined scenario. Starting from the extensive literature research, the evolution of the circular economy concept is defined, highlighting its characteristics and practices. The factors influencing the transition process are identified, distinguishing them into drivers and barriers and classifying them according to criteria adopted in the literature. The discussion is completed with a revision of the classification aimed at focusing the importance of the ecosystem perspective for the effective implementation of circular business models. Finally, an in-depth study is carried out on the Italian food & beverage sector to understand the current level of adoption. To this end, representative case studies of circular strategies implemented by Italian companies are reported, and the analysis is comprehensively completed by applying the different circularity frameworks to highlight the practices adopted.

Abstract
To this end, representative case studies of circular strategies implemented by Italian companies are reported, and the analysis is comprehensively completed by applying the different circularity frameworks to highlight the practices adopted.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
