LaBel. Recupero, rifunzionalizzazione e valorizzazione del Castello di Belforte a Varese.

The laBel cultural centre is the result of a design process born out of an interest in the Belforte Castle complex in Varese: a place whose singular history can be read in its heterogeneous and incomplete form and appearance. This uniqueness, which had gone unnoticed for a long time, was sanctioned in 2021 with the winning of the ministerial competition Grandi Progetti Beni Culturali, with whose funds the Belforte restoration project would be planned. It was therefore decided to develop the design starting from the indications of the call for bids, which states the intention of making part of the castle the site of the Risorgimento Civic Museum, which leaves numerous design scenarios open. It was therefore necessary to understand the context of Varese and the history of the Belforte in its entirety. This phase, although full of obstacles, was fundamental to understanding the historical and architectural value of the Castle. Knowledge of the state of affairs, both on an urban and local scale, made it possible to identify the objectives for the recovery and re-functioning of the Castle in art, culture and local development. Aware of the intended use and respecting the existing architecture, the architectural project was developed, in which the relationship with the area’s pre-existing features, light, materials and structure were highly considered. These aspects had a decisive influence on the architectural and design choices, with a view to a multidisciplinary approach to the project. The subject of light was dealt with in depth in order to understand how to cope with the lack of light that characterises the portions of the existing building and thus achieve the best architectural design. A hint of the most suitable passive energy strategies to be applied, while respecting the principles of environmental sustainability, has also been included. This paper is therefore intended to share the guidelines with which, in the future and in possession of more information, we will and can approach the restoration of Belforte Castle.

Il centro culturale laBel è il risultato di un percorso di progettazione nato dall’interesse per il complesso del Castello di Belforte a Varese: un luogo la cui singolare storia si può leggere nelle sue forme e nel suo aspetto eterogeneo ed incompleto. Tale eccezionalità, passata per molto tempo inosservata, è stata sancita nel 2021 con la vincita del bando ministeriale Grandi Progetti Beni Culturali, con i cui fondi sarebbe in programma il progetto di recupero del Belforte. Si è quindi deciso di sviluppare la progettazione partendo dalle indicazioni del bando, il quale dichiara l’intento i rendere parte del Castello sede del Museo civico risorgimentale, il che lascia aperte numerosi scenari di progettazione. È stato quindi necessario comprendere il contesto di Varese e la storia del Belforte, nella sua interezza. Questa fase, seppure ricca di ostacoli, è stata fondamentale per comprende il valore storico e architettonico del Castello. La conoscenza dello stato di fatto, sia alla scala urbana che locale, ha permesso di individuare nell’arte, nella cultura e nella valorizzazione locale gli obiettivi per il recupero e la rifunzionalizzazione del Castello. Consapevoli delle destinazioni d’uso e nel rispetto dell’architettura esistente è stato sviluppato il progetto architettonico, nel quale sono stati tenuti altamente in considerazione il rapporto con le preesistenze dell’area, la luce, i materiali e la struttura. Questi aspetti hanno influenzato in modo determinante le scelte architettoniche e progettuali, in un’ottica di approccio multidisciplinare al progetto. Il tema della luce è stato trattato in maniera approfondita in modo da comprendere come ottemperare alla poca luminosità che caratterizza le porzioni di edificio esistente ed ottenere così il miglior assetto architettonico. È stato anche inserito un accenno alle strategie energetiche passive più adatte ad essere applicate, nel rispetto dei principi della sostenibilità ambientale. Questo elaborato vuole, quindi, condividere le linee guida con cui, in un futuro e in possesso di maggiori informazioni, si voglia e possa approcciarsi al recupero del Castello di Belforte.
