Abstract
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has embarked on a journey of economic, social, and political reforms ever since King Abdullah's accession to the throne. As a pivotal element in the execution of these reforms, the Kingdom has made substantial investments in a multitude of megaprojects aimed at the modernisation of its infrastructure. In conjunction with ongoing sociopolitical transformations within the nation, these megaprojects are strategically positioned to play a crucial role in facilitating the realisation of these reform objectives. The research undertakes a comprehensive investigation of the King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD) in Riyadh – an urban development endeavour acclaimed as the largest aggregation of high-rise structures within the kingdom. Beyond its architectural grandeur, the study focuses on the rhetoric employed for the promotion of KAFD, with specific emphasis on its pronounced commitment to sustainability. Within this context, several pivotal questions emerge, shedding light on the intricate dynamics that encompass the origin and dissemination of KAFD: determining the origins of the KAFD model for urban development and identifying the influential figures who played an instrumental role in shaping its architectural design. This exploration encompasses an examination of the inspirations that underpinned this ambitious vision and an elucidation of the key decision-makers responsible for its conceptualization; what inspired this grand vision, and who were the decision-makers behind its conception? Accountability becomes a focal point in understanding the trajectory of KAFD's development. Who does bear responsibility for the project's outcomes, and how are accountability structures defined within this context? This illuminates the delineation of accountability structures within the context. KAFD's role in the broader national aspirations of Saudi Arabia is examined. How does this megaproject align with the Kingdom's endeavours to diversify its economy and reduce its dependency on oil revenue? Can it truly serve as a catalyst for the desired economic transformation? This research scrutinizes the tactics used in the Gulf region and Saudi Arabia to showcase projects realized in this area as a symbol of global recognition and prestige. How does international acknowledgment translate into local approval, and what strategies are employed to achieve this alignment? This aspect aims to anticipate the role of KAFD as an emblem of global recognition and its influence on local approval within the Kingdom. Embarking on a comprehensive exploration of the multifaceted dimensions surrounding the King Abdullah Financial District, an attempt to unveil the complex interplay of rhetoric, sustainability, national aspirations, accountability structures, consensus-building strategies, and strategic persuasion emerges. By doing so, the research aims to provide nuanced insights into the profound significance of KAFD within the evolving landscape of Saudi Arabia's urban and economic development.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
