Amidst the growing awareness of the climate crisis, posthumanist thought has strongly challenged anthropocentrism, deeming it shared responsibility for the environmental challenges shaping our contemporary context. This thesis is situated within this post-humanist and post-anthropocentric research framework, seeking to go beyond anthropocentrism through new narratives and imaginative modes of thought and action within and beyond the design field. This research seeks to critically examine human-centred thinking and its consequences through the lens of posthumanist theories. The heart of this study lies in the convergence between these theories and design practices. It explores the potential transformative impact of a paradigm shift in the values that define the contemporary context of the design discipline. The research delves into the intersection of posthumanist theories, design practices, and narratives aimed at conveying and fostering this profound shift. Within posthumanist thought, narrative assumes a fundamental role in challenging anthropocentrism and in the processes of world-making. Among the design practices best suited to creating innovative narratives capable of imagining different realities is the design of interactive and immersive experiences that employ extended reality. These characteristics make the field of narratives mediated by extended reality technologies ideal for exploring the intersection between posthumanist thought and design. Therefore, this research aims to outline approaches that help to overcome a human-centred perspective by analysing existing design practices and case studies. These design explorations rely on storytelling as a tool to envision and bring to life alternative perspectives, embedding posthumanist values into the design discipline. The investigation ultimately probes the potential of posthumanist narratives mediated by extended realities technologies, in shaping interactive experiences capable of inspiring critical reflection and prompting a reconsideration of the relationships between humans and more-than-human worlds.

Abstract
The investigation ultimately probes the potential of posthumanist narratives mediated by extended realities technologies, in shaping interactive experiences capable of inspiring critical reflection and prompting a reconsideration of the relationships between humans and more-than-human worlds.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
