In response to the escalating environmental and social challenges of our time, this thesis investigates how systemic design thinking can support companies in fostering sustainable business innovation. Systemic design thinking, which merges systemic design and design thinking principles, offers a holistic method for tackling today’s complex problems through methodologies, tools, knowledge, mindset, and skills, promoting a more interconnected and dynamic approach. By examining current research literature, real-world cases, and collecting first-hand data through a bootcamp, this thesis identifies gaps and opportunities within current processes and practices. The analysis is conducted from both a managerial perspective, effective in addressing economic and organizational processes, and a design thinking perspective, promising in tackling not just innovation but also wicked problems such as sustainability. It is therefore deduced how the systemic view is often missing in today's debate about design thinking, which needs to be incorporated for a more comprehensive approach. The research work then illustrates how systemic design thinking can develop long-term, impactful strategies, addressing the question: "How can companies effectively integrate systemic design into their sustainable business innovation strategies to achieve macro-level and lasting impact?" Additionally, it explores how leadership structures influence the successful implementation of these strategies. Objectives include elucidating the principles of systemic design and design thinking relevant to sustainability, creating a framework for these principles in business contexts, and providing actionable recommendations for businesses and their leadership to effectively transfer mindset, methodologies, and skills. This framework has been later assessed through interviews and later validated through a workshop. Overall, this research fills a notable gap in the literature on sustainable development. Through its comprehensive approach, it aims to contribute significantly to academic discourse and provides practical tools for businesses and their leaders navigating the complexities of sustainable innovation.

Abstract
Through its comprehensive approach, it aims to contribute significantly to academic discourse and provides practical tools for businesses and their leaders navigating the complexities of sustainable innovation.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
