This thesis explores the condition of marginality of Muslim women in contemporary cities, specifically in Milan, and proposes a project for the area of Porta Genova aimed at counteracting the socio-spatial isolation that limits their presence in public space. The echoes of Orientalist narratives that crystallised after the events of the September 2001 continue to haunt Muslim women in Italy and beyond, shaping policies and societal attitudes. As a result, Muslim women encounter numerous obstacles in accessing public spaces, as well as employment opportunities, and social and civic life. A persistent exclusion exacerbated by the current wave of conservative nationalism that, with its veiled xenophobia and exclusionary nostalgia denies the plural constituency of contemporary cities and undermines the values of tolerance, non-discrimination and freedom enshrined in European treaties. Today, Muslim women traverse an environment where their presence is constantly challenged, their identities scrutinised, and their autonomy eroded, leading to palpable exclusion and discrimination. Through an empirical study mapping Milan from the perspective of Muslim women, the research aims to craft a new urban space typology that embraces their presence, enabling them to assert and negotiate their place and multitude of identities in the city. The proposed architectural project for the decommissioned Scalo Porta Genova experiments with novel relational forms, without adhering to a normative framework that transcends lived experiences. It postulates that cohesion only takes on a contingent meaning within intervention practices, namely through dialogue with the places and the people who inhabit them. Thus, the project proposed serves as an exercise of social cohesion, constructed through a collective effort that takes into account diverse life situations and contexts, while simultaneously deploying possibilities for emancipation and the expansion of the boundaries of citizenship.

Abstract
Thus, the project proposed serves as an exercise of social cohesion, constructed through a collective effort that takes into account diverse life situations and contexts, while simultaneously deploying possibilities for emancipation and the expansion of the boundaries of citizenship.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
