Student housing in città vecchia, una sfida di rigenerazione urbana

The contemporary University plays a crucial role as an urban actor, capable of promoting strategies of urban and social regeneration and renewal. Student housing can act as a catalyst for change, attracting young talents and creating a dynamic and stimulating environment, thus regenerating the urban social fabric and promoting the development of an economy based on knowledge and creativity. The case of the old city in Taranto is an experiment and a complex challenge capable of putting the theme of urban regeneration to the test. Taranto is a city that has always been underestimated, which has been influenced by large-scale industry and the military arsenal. This city, with its unique location and its natural, cultural and historical riches, has all the credentials to become a pole of attraction for students and researchers. By promoting a sustainable and integrated development model, Taranto can become a virtuous example of how industrial cities can reinvent themselves and thrive in a post-industrial world. The context in which the project is inserted is highly complex but at the same time fascinating, unique and rare: an island that emerges in the middle of two seas, sculpted by human habitation, rich in memory, history and identity. The thesis is proposed as a project of resilience. At the center is the value of the ancient historical city of Taranto, which does not want to lose its identity, but rather intervene by philologically reconstructing what time and neglect have destroyed. The insertion of a student residence within a highly compact, historical and degraded context represents a great challenge both in terms of urban regeneration but also in terms of experimentation of the residence and its spaces. A model of residence, in our case for students, that can be re-proposed with the same method throughout the island. The project marries new possible ways of living shared between different types of users: students, tourists, workers. Recovery, enhancement, reinterpretation, reconstructions become key words for the intervention of this project.

L’Università contemporanea svolge un ruolo cruciale come attore urbano, capace di promuovere strategie di rigenerazione e rinnovamento urbano e sociale. La residenza per studenti può agire da catalizzatore per il cambiamento, attirando giovani talenti e creando un ambiente dinamico e stimolante, rigenerando così il tessuto urbano sociale e favorendo lo sviluppo di un’economia basata sulla conoscenza e la creatività. Il caso della città vecchia a Taranto è una sperimentazione e una sfida complessa capace di mettere a dura prova il tema della rigenerazione urbana. Taranto è una città da sempre sottovalutata, che ha subito l’influenza della grande industria e dell’arsenale militare. Questa città con la sua posizione unica e le sue ricchezze naturali, culturali e storiche, ha tutte le carte in regola per diventare un polo di attrazione per studenti e ricercatori. Promuovendo un modello di sviluppo sostenibile e integrato, Taranto può trasformarsi in un esempio virtuoso di come le città industriali possano reinventarsi e prosperare in un mondo post-industriale. Il contesto in cui si inserisce il progetto è fortemente complesso ma al contempo affascinante, unico e raro: un’isola che emerge in mezzo ai due mari, scolpita dall’abitare umano, ricco di memoria, storia e identità. La tesi si propone come un progetto di resilienza. Al centro c’è il valore dell’antica città storica di Taranto, che non vuole perdere la propria identità, ma piuttosto intervenire ricostruendo filologicamente ciò che il tempo e l’incuria hanno distrutto. L'inserimento di una residenza per studenti all'interno di un contesto fortemente compatto, storico e degradato rappresenta una grande sfida sia di rigenerazione urbana ma anche di sperimentazione della residenza e dei suoi spazi. Un modello di residenza, nel nostro caso per studenti, che è possibile riproporre con lo stesso metodo in tutta l’isola. Il progetto si sposa con nuove possibili modi di abitare condiviso tra utenti di diverso tipo: studenti, turisti, lavoratori. Recupero, valorizzazione, reinterpretazione, ricostruzioni diventano parole chiavi per l'intervento di questo progetto.
