Open wounds on ground: an analysis of borders

The aim of the following research is to provide a multidisciplinary understanding of the concept of borders through the lens of varied scholars from diverse fields. This is achieved through an exploration of the term ‘border’ itself, and the connotations it has in different contexts. The reseacrh begins from the basic definition of the term and then develops into a deeper understanding of what a border represents and that how the architecture and planning are the mediators of the formation of borders. Other than accepting ‘border’ as a single line, the discussant argues that borders are fluid entities subject to never ending evolution that is impacted by the surrounding social and physical environment. Through the discussion, geopolitical borders are chosen as the focus of the research and are then further examined through a framework of analysis. The analysis suggests various aspects that help in categorising borders into different typologies. Relevant cases from different parts of the world such as the US-Mexico border or the West Bank Barrier along with others are presented in order to support the discussion and provide a base for the research. Selected case studies help in comparing borders present in different regions and to see what is impactful on the similarities and differences. A final case study is analysed in order to better examine the background that leads to the formation of borders. Isreali-Palestinian case is selected as the case study and is discussed through its historical and physical background.

L’obiettivo della seguente ricerca è quello di fornire una comprensione multidisciplinare del concetto di confine attraverso la lente di vari studiosi provenienti da diversi campi. Questo obiettivo viene raggiunto attraverso l’esplorazione del termine stesso “confine” e delle connotazioni che esso assume in diversi contesti. La ricerca parte dalla definizione di base del termine per poi svilupparsi in una comprensione più profonda di ciò che un confine rappresenta e di come l’architettura e la pianificazione siano i mediatori della formazione dei confini. Oltre ad accettare il “confine” come un’unica linea, il relatore sostiene che i confini sono entità fluide soggette a un’evoluzione senza fine, influenzata dall’ambiente sociale e fisico circostante. Attraverso la discussione, i confini geopolitici sono stati scelti come focus della ricerca e sono stati ulteriormente esaminati attraverso un quadro di analisi. L’analisi suggerisce vari aspetti che aiutano a classificare i confini in diverse tipologie. Per sostenere la discussione e fornire una base alla ricerca, vengono presentati casi rilevanti provenienti da diverse parti del mondo, come il confine tra Stati Uniti e Messico o la barriera in Cisgiordania. I casi di studio selezionati aiutano a confrontare i confini presenti in diverse regioni e a vedere quali sono le differenze e le somiglianze. Un ultimo caso di studio viene analizzato per esaminare meglio il contesto che porta alla formazione dei confini. Il caso Isrealiano-Palestinese è stato scelto come caso di studio e viene discusso attraverso il suo contesto storico e fisico.
