Di verde e cultura. Un cultural visitors centre in Abbey Green ai margini di Londra

is work is developed from the refl ection on the continuous and fast changes that have concerned the today’s urban settings and have led to refl ect on the European city, its transformations and on the renovated policies for development of urban space in the outer fringes of the city, which is place for the requalifi cation and the “re-design“ new green spaces in the city. In particular, we deal the issue of green in the contemporary city wondering about the new forms and new meanings of the public park on the edge of the city. e park is an important resource of the city and represents the revitalization element for the suburbs and create a high quality vision for the whole city.11 In this area the design become the tool to enhance and promote the distinctive properties of a place and make it unique and attractive. e interest goes to the strategic planning role of design in the public green space’s project in the edge of the city. is work is the continuity of the Design Competition: Abbey Green, a competition whose aim was to redesign a public green space, located in a suburb of London, and carries on the studio Lynch Architects’s project, who worked on the aggregation spaces, playgrounds and facilities for the park and the city. e projectual application of this thesis focuses on the theme of Cultural Visitors Centre, as a catalyst for the entire district, and neighboring cities, able to bring the public close to the cultural heritage, and extend into the fi eld of communication as a means to enhance the usability and visibility of the park.

Il presente lavoro si colloca nel contesto sociale contemporaneo, in cui i continui e rapidi cambiamenti che investono gli assetti urbani odierni e portano a rifl ettere sulla città europea, portano a rifl ettere sulle sue trasformazioni e sulla possibilità di rinnovate strategie d’intervento riguardanti gli spazi urbani a partire dalle periferie quali leve di riqualifi cazione e “ridisegno” dei nuovi spazi verdi della città. In particolare, si aff ronta il tema del verde nella città contemporanea interrogandosi sulle nuove forme e i nuovi signifi cati che assume il parco pubblico ai margini della città. Il parco è una risorsa fondamentale della città e rappresenta l’elemento di rilancio per i quartieri periferici. In questo ambito si inserisce il design quale strumento utile alla valorizzazione e alla promozione delle proprietà distintive di un luogo rendendolo unico e attraente. L’interesse, quindi, si spinge verso il ruolo progettuale strategico del design all’interno dello spazio verde pubblico della città periferica. Questo lavoro si colloca in continuità con la Design Competition: Abbey Green, un concorso indetto da Design for London e London Borough of Barking and Dagenham (LBBD) nel 2009 la cui fi nalità era ridisegnare uno spazio verde pubblico, situato in un quartiere periferico della città di Londra, e dialoga con il progetto dello studio Lynch Architects, che ha lavorato su spazi di aggregazione, playground e servizi per il parco e la città. L’applicazione progettuale di questa tesi si focalizza sul tema del Cultural Visitors Centre, quale catalizzatore per l’intero quartiere, e per quelli limitrofi , capace di avvicinare il pubblico al patrimonio culturale presente, e si estende nel campo della comunicazione come strumento di potenziamento per la fruibilità e visibilità del parco.
