This thesis explores the role of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) as both a mindset and a software solution, emphasizing its importance in maintaining a unified focus across diverse organizational units throughout a product's lifecycle. The research particularly focuses on the fashion industry, a significant global economic player with unique challenges such as rapid time-to-market, complex supply chains, and the need for sustainability. The research begins with a market analysis of existing PLM solutions tailored for the fashion sector, identifying key functionalities that could benefit the industry, such as market analysis tools, 3D design visualization, and supply chain management. Through a literature review, the study reveals that while PLM is widely adopted in other industries, its use in fashion remains limited, despite its potential advantages. Based on the identified functionalities, criteria were developed to evaluate prominent PLM providers. This evaluation involved a detailed review of fashion PLM providers to assess whether their solutions addressed the critical functionalities identified as essential for the fashion industry. The findings suggest that most PLM offerings currently focus on product design and development, with limited emphasis on sustainability features. To further investigate this gap, interviews were conducted with experts, including industry professionals and academics specializing in PLM at the graduate level. These discussions provided deeper insights into why sustainability is not yet a primary focus in the current PLM landscape for fashion. The thesis concludes that a strategic alignment of PLM implementation with company goals, supported by comprehensive provider assistance, is crucial for fully realizing PLM’s potential, particularly in advancing sustainability within the industry.
