This thesis work aims to present the state-of-the-art of Smart Road projects in Italy and in the rest of the world by offering an overview of the most widespread and popular applications, functions, solutions and services provided and enabled by the aforementioned projects, with the related benefits obtained. To answer this first research question, a literature review was drawn up based on research material regarding the Smart Road topic, with the aim of summarizing and presenting in a qualitative way what Smart Roads are for and at what point is their level of development, innovation and implementation to date. Furthermore, a more detailed analysis was performed based on a sample of Smart Road projects surveyed within a Database, after having populated the latter with more recent projects. The most significant results extracted from the analysis conducted were then exposed, integrated with graphic and quantitative representations. In this part, further analyses were also carried out aimed at finding any existing correlations between the applications, services and benefits provided by the projects surveyed. Eventually, a qualitative framework was developed and commented with the aim of answering the second research question regarding emerging and innovative services enabled by connectivity, and identifying different clusters comprising Smart Road projects that presented similar key features and key services.
Il presente lavoro di tesi si propone di presentare lo stato dell’arte dei progetti Smart Road in Italia e nel resto del mondo offrendo una panoramica delle applicazioni, funzioni, servizi e soluzioni più diffuse e gettonate, fornite e abilitate dai suddetti progetti, con i relativi benefici ottenuti. Per rispondere a questa prima domanda di ricerca è stata redatta una revisione della letteratura basata su materiale di ricerca riguardante il tema Smart Road, con l’intento di riassumere e presentare in modo qualitativo a cosa servono le Smart Road e a che punto è il loro livello di sviluppo, innovazione ed implementazione ad oggi. Inoltre, è stata effettuata un’analisi più dettagliata sulla base di un campione di progetti Smart Road censiti all’interno di un Database, dopo aver popolato quest’ultimo con progetti più recenti. Sono stati quindi esposti i risultati più significativi estratti dalle analisi eseguite, integrati con rappresentazioni grafiche e quantitative. In questa parte sono state inoltre condotte ulteriori analisi volte a ricercare eventuali correlazioni esistenti tra le applicazioni, i servizi ed i benefici forniti dai progetti censiti. Infine, è stato sviluppato e commentato un framework qualitativo con l’obiettivo di rispondere alla seconda domanda di ricerca riguardante i servizi emergenti e innovativi abilitati dalla connettività, e individuare diversi cluster comprendenti progetti Smart Road che presentassero caratteristiche chiave e servizi chiave simili.
