When the inequality between the North and the South, caused by the once famous marine transportation, starts to become an obstacle in the development of one of them Rotterdam South, „the city behind the dikes”, - located on the southern bank of Nieuwe Maas river is at the major crossover of its future life: will it be fruitful, strong or will it be solely used for marine transshipment purposes? The Crossover Factory is a proposal of ours that we believe is capable of putting a huge milestone in the elimination of the inequality problem between those two banks of the same city. A proposal that can help the hidden city extend over the dikes and nourish instead of having to shelter behind it. Constant study and examination of „urban architecture”, understanding how to transform the urban environment into the building, how to fill the building with autonomic programs while still maintaining vertical and horizontal unification - were the challenges that we faced during the cultivation process of the Crossover Factory. And what to do with the historical port infrastructure located just along all the perimeter of the critical territory which needs urgent actions in order to revitalize itself and the city behind it? Building over the water, learning how to deal with water management in the most sustainable way, implementing greenery in historical perimeters, constructing where the old meets the new, bringing new functions to heritage, and learning how to build new residential areas while respecting the historical belt of the port. And lastly, understanding how the structure can become an architectural language. Experimenting with megastructures, learning through constant trials, bringing them to work, and displaying them in the most delicate architectural way. Qual è il potere di un monumento nel conflitto tra due sponde dello stesso fiume?
