This study explores the sense of presence – as being aware, critically assessing, and self-reflective – and its benefits and the risks associated with its absence in urban environments. Cities are recognised at the forefront of addressing modern challenges and require new modes of collaboration, awareness, and innovation that align with the values of presence to confront challenges effectively. The research examines the self-perpetuating mechanisms of cities, where long-acknowledged intensity triggers psychological responses of indifference and distraction, now exacerbated by technological advancements and increasing urbanisation. It questions whether such an environment can support a sense of presence, and with that – facing the challenges that contemporary cities face. In this context, the study navigates to the problem of “sensory overstimulation” as a significant issue, with noise pollution identified as the main and most neglected problem. Thus, the research question addresses the impact of noise pollution on the sense of presence in contemporary cities. Utilising a literature review and primary data from surveys and interviews with young adults and noise pollution expert, the research highlights the need for societal awareness as a primary step in mitigating noise pollution to further advocate for substantial systemic changes in policies and governance. The study concludes with a proposal for an awareness campaign designed to promote silence-friendly solutions and spaces in urban areas, supporting mindful and present living through innovative noise management solutions, with the aim to enhance overall wellbeing and effective navigation of urban challenges.

Abstract
The study concludes with a proposal for an awareness campaign designed to promote silence-friendly solutions and spaces in urban areas, supporting mindful and present living through innovative noise management solutions, with the aim to enhance overall wellbeing and effective navigation of urban challenges.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
