This paper presents a comprehensive literature review on platform cooperatives, uncovering the context and the reason behind their emergence, key insights into their lifecycle, the development of their taxonomy, and the rarity of their existence, along with the challenges that they are facing. The study addresses the research question based on the taxonomy and lifecycle of platform cooperatives, examining the drivers of success across different types of platform cooperatives as nascent platform cooperatives and transformed platform cooperatives. To explore these dynamics, the paper utilizes two case studies in delivery sector: CoopCycle and Radish. The analysis identifies several critical success factors, including mainly various sources of revenues, wise cost structure, political environment, entrepreneurship, and the adoption of platform thinking at the management level. Additionally, the paper highlights the need for a stakeholder analysis framework for further and more detailed understanding on stakeholders’ needs and proposes future research path for platform cooperatives based on the newly built taxonomy. This thesis aims to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the elements influencing platform cooperative’s long-term survival and success, providing a reference for current platform cooperatives in delivery sector.
Questa ricerca presenta una revisione della letteratura sulle piattaforme cooperative, evidenziando le ragioni alla base delle loro nascite, fornendo approfondimenti chiave sul loro ciclo di vita, la loro classificazione le motivazione della loro scarsa diffusione, nonché le sfide che stanno affrontando. Lo studio ha l’obiettivo di investigare i fattori determinanti del successo dei diversi tipi di cooperative, partendo dalle tassonomie presenti in letteratura che distingue le piattaforme cooperative “per natura” o quelle costituite per “trasformazione” da altre forme organizzative. Per esplorare queste dinamiche, il lavoro utilizza due casi di studio: CoopCycle e Radish. L'analisi identifica diversi fattori critici di successo, tra cui principalmente diverse fonti di reddito, struttura dei costi saggia, l'ambiente politico, l'imprenditorialità e l'adozione di una mentalità di piattaforma a livello gestionale. Inoltre, il lavoro sottolinea la necessità di un quadro di analisi degli stakeholder per guidare percorsi di ricerca futuri più approfonditi e dettagliati e propone l'integrazione della misurazione dell'impatto nelle pratiche di gestione e valutazione delle cooperative di piattaforma. Questa tesina mira a offrire una comprensione più completa degli elementi che influenzano la loro sopravvivenza e il successo a lungo termine, fornendo una referenza per le attuali cooperative di piattaforma nel settore delle consegne.
