The continuous growth of the aviation industry, coupled with the ongoing increase in air traffic, further emphasizes the importance of flight safety, making accident prevention a fundamental requirement for maintaining the high standards of safety and reliability demanded by the sector. This thesis aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the investigation processes and techniques employed by aviation investigation authorities, with a specific focus on safety investigations. It examines the regulatory framework that governs these authorities, at both international and European levels and explores the methodologies used to identify the causes and contributing factors. Additionally, the thesis presents a detailed case study of an aviation accident, analyzed according to the standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The case study serves as a practical application of the methodologies examined, demonstrating how thorough investigations contribute to accident prevention. This study was conducted under the guidance of the Italian Civil Aviation Safety Investigation Authority (Agenzia Nazionale per la Sicurezza del Volo, ANSV) to ensure full adherence to established protocols and standards in aviation safety investigations.
