This thesis examines the influences of the Modern Movement in urban planning, applied in the construction of new cities during the early XX century. A historical review was done considering the thematic framework of urban planning, followed by the study of Italian and Brazilian urban realities. As examples to illustrate the influences mentioned before, two cross-national case studies, Littoria, now Latina (Italy) and Goiânia (Brazil), were selected to investigate modern planning solutions, implemented in the same period, following similar rules, built under contrasting social, political, cultural, and environmental contexts. The research analyzes comparatively the political intentions, historical background, and formal urban composition of the original nucleuses, planned in the 1930s, as well as population growth and city expansions until current days. The outcome expressed mostly differences between them but also developed a corresponding discussion regarding urban identity, heritage recognizability, and the transformation of the modern landscape.

Abstract
The outcome expressed mostly differences between them but also developed a corresponding discussion regarding urban identity, heritage recognizability, and the transformation of the modern landscape.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
