This Master thesis investigates the potential for integrating Lean Manufacturing principles with Industry 4.0 technologies to improve performance in the engineer-to-order (ETO) furniture industry. The study focuses on a case within a high-end Italian furniture company, which is facing challenges related to customization, lead time and production management complexity. Through a systematic literature review, the study identifies the most effective lean tools and advanced technologies applicable to the ETO environment. Then a tailored framework is developed for ETO furniture companies, combining lean principles and emerging technologies in an integrated way. The framework addresses critical areas for the sector, including production-oriented design, lean design through technology, and the integration of design and production processes. This thesis contributes to the limited research on the application of Lean Manufacturing in the ETO sectors, providing actionable insights for improving operational efficiency, reducing waste, and enhancing competitiveness in highly variable, customized production environments. The results of the industrial case study demonstrate the successful implementation of the framework, which has led to significant improvements in process standardization, communication and coordination, and product quality. These improvements have resulted in reduced lead times, increased efficiency and greater customer satisfaction.
