A Systemic Perspective of Unsustainability

There is a growing discussion in project studies regarding sustainability. In this discussion the word “unsustainable” is anecdotally used, mostly to signify something that is the opposite of sustainable. Yet, this implicit understanding trivialises the concept and, a more nuanced approach to the ontology of “unsustainability” is needed. Drawing on literature from project studies and sustainable transition research, this dissertation aims to investigate projects’ unsustainability. This dissertation makes two contributions. First, we ontologically define an “unsustainable project” as a project that makes or keeps societies less sustainable. Secondly, we develop an operational framework to evaluate a project’s unsustainability by juxtaposing it with the context in which the project is intervening. By applying our framework to three we show that projects can hardly embed sustainability “of the project” dimensions and that the “of the project” can have long-term impacts. This framework is a valuable tool for academics to discuss projects’ unsustainability and for practitioners in the selection process of projects for achieving sustainable futures.

C’è una crescente discussione riguardante la sostenibilità nella letteratura sui progetti. In questa discussione la parola ‘insostenibile’ è usata in maniera destrutturata, perlopiù per significare qualcosa all’opposto della sostenibilità. Tuttavia, questo significato sottointeso della parola ‘insostenibile’ ne banalizza il significato, per tanto è necessario un approccio più strutturato all’ontologia dell’insostenibilità. Basandoci sulla letteratura sui progetti e sulla ricerca per le transizioni verso la sostenibilità, la nostra tesi investiga l’insostenibilità dei progetti. In particolare, in questa tesi facciamo due contribuzioni. Anzitutto, diamo una definizione ontologica di cosa è un ‘progetto insostenibile’, cioè un progetto che rende o mantiene le società meno sostenibili. Dopodiché, sviluppiamo un framework operativo che valuta l’insostenibilità dei progetti, confrontandone gli impatti con il relativo contesto in cui intervengono. Applicando il nostro framework a 5 vignette, mostriamo che un progetto può difficilmente aver dimensioni di sostenibilità “of the project” e che la dimensione di “of the project” può creare impatti a lungo termine sui ST-systems. Il nostro framework può essere uno strumento valido per la discussione dell’insostenibilità nei progetti e per la selezione dei progetti per la transizione verso futuri più sostenibili.
