This thesis aims at analyzing living condition of Dharavi slum dwellers and their employment in Dharavi region in Mumbai. This study fills a missing link in traditional rehabilitation projects by looking at the peculiarities of slum conditions in India and the world. This gap is caused by the inability to adequately address the combined home and work requirements that are inherent in the lives of the slum dwellers.Any effective urban intervention strategies cannot only focus on housing but also has to focus on the economy that supports such settlements. The proposed solution is a dual-faceted approach: First it is necessary to address the social isolation of slums from the city and restore the connection between Dharavi and the rest of Mumbai, allowing local artisans to sell their goods to a wider audience. The second component zooms in on Kumbharwada - The Potter’s Colony which is one such small scale sector where the entire production process happens within Dharavi itself, at this stage their individual requirements are addressed as well as preservation of traditions by applying sustainable design guidelines of redesigning the colony, both these together make a holistic approach for addressing some of the issues faced in Dharavi.
