This thesis explores the multifaceted phenomenon of retrofuturism, examining its origins, evolution, and impact on contemporary design and visual culture. Retrofuturism, which emerged in the 1970s, represents a unique intersection of past visions of the future with present-day perspectives, blending nostalgia with forward-looking imagination. Through analysis of historical movements, artistic expressions, and cultural shifts, this research traces retrofuturism’s roots from ancient traditions and shamanic practices to 20th-century futurism and science fiction. The study investigates key characteristics of retrofuturism, including its ability to reinterpret past futuristic visions, disrupt conventional temporal boundaries, and reflect both optimism and pessimism about technological progress. By examining visual cases from literature, art, film, and design, the thesis demonstrates how retrofuturism has shaped aesthetic trends and communicative strategies across various media. Furthermore, this research considers the broader implications of retrofuturism as a lens for understanding societal attitudes towards technology, progress, and the relationship between past and future. It explores how retrofuturistic elements in contemporary design can contribute to brand revitalization, nostalgia marketing, and the creation of meaningful consumer experiences. Ultimately, this thesis aims to comprehensively understand retrofuturism’s role in shaping visual culture, design trends, and our collective imagination of possible futures. By analyzing its multidimensional nature and ongoing evolution, the study offers insights into how retrofuturism continues to influence creative expression and cultural discourse in the 21st century.
