Abstract
Architecture is the art of creating shelter for the community, adapting to its changes. Architecture responds not only to people’s needs but also to their dreams and desires. Architecture is beauty: true beauty is when the invisible joins the visible. Thus, the art of producing shelters soars beyond mere functionality in an attempt to make necessity a means of expression and celebration. The Emergency hospital in Entebbe, Uganda, is an integration of healthcare functionality and environmental sustainability; it is architecture that contributes to community well-being in critical contexts. It begins with the power of necessity to arrive at the art of representation, and only when the ability to respond to real need can coincide with the ability to respond to desires is that where architecture becomes extraordinarily beautiful. In the wake of the global COVID-19 pandemic and the continuing epidemics plaguing Africa, there is an emerging urgency to develop autonomous health support that is adaptable to the continent’s hot climate and independent of international assistance. Emergency sails has the opportunity to respond to health emergencies and create spaces that promote hope for local communities. Beauty, understood as outward appearance and as human, technological, scientific and environmental excellence, are the guiding principles for designing a temporary hospital that responds to health emergencies in a way that is respectful to African people. Transparency in which people seeking help and support are bathed in natural light thanks to a sophisticated system of roofing elements that diffuse light into the rooms, proposes guidelines for the development of health infrastructure in disadvantaged areas in line with the principles of sustainability and humanistic design. The goal is to propose a temporary minimum emergency health unit designed to be modular and easily implemented. Ethics and aesthetics come together for a project that symbolizes respect and consideration for local communities, promoting architecture that combines functionality and beauty.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
