The medieval town of Genazzano, located within the hills of Rome, shows a unique spatial organization that reflects a blend of natural and architectural elements. While the town’s historical significance is evident in its organic growth and monumental structures, modern needs for accessibility pose significant challenges, particularly in areas with drastic elevation differences. The 20-meter vertical gap between the main settlement and the side road leading to Bramante’s Nymphaeum, now utilized as a parking area, highlights the growing tension between heritage preservation and contemporary functionality. This thesis aims to provide a sensitive architectural solution to the topography-related accessibility issues in Genazzano. By designing a series of footbridges, stairs, and elevators, the project addresses the need to connect the car parking area to the town’s key landmarks, including the Nymphaeum and the main squares, while preserving the town’s historic character. The proposed design also includes scenic viewpoints, allowing residents and visitors to engage more deeply with the landscape and historical architecture during their journey. Drawing inspiration from both historical precedents and contemporary urban design principles, this work explores how architecture can be a mediator between past and present. The integration of modern structures within the historical fabric of Genazzano seeks to not only solve functional challenges but also create an enhanced spatial experience. This thesis embraces the town’s vertical nature, allowing it to flourish as a place where history, architecture, and the landscape are harmoniously intertwined.

Abstract
This thesis embraces the town’s vertical nature, allowing it to flourish as a place where history, architecture, and the landscape are harmoniously intertwined.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
