Home to Italy’s “White Gold”, the prominent city of Carrara faces a reality far different from the grandeur and prosperity often associated with its famous marble. The extraction and processing of marble have been central to Carrara’s economy for centuries. However, this long-term exploitation has led to significant environmental issues, including deforestation, landscape alteration and water pollution, which have adversely affected the quality of life for its residents. Increased awareness of these challenges has since necessitated the adoption of more sustainable and conscious approaches to landscape conservation and urban development. This includes efforts to protect and enhance natural spaces and to rehabilitate under-utilized lands for the benefit of the community. These initiatives aim to balance economic interests with environmental and social well-being. One such initiative is that of the territorial unit of Villa Ceci, the only remaining green lung of the anthropized regions of Carrara. As a site of historical landscape value, it requires immediate strategic transformation. This project intends to requalify this neglected site into an efficient public space with renewed purpose. It involves heritage conservation and community engagement, in addition to enhancing the existing characters. By implementing environmentally-sensitive landscape and architectural interventions, the project seeks to better integrate the site to the urban fabric, making it more relevant to the community. In addition to its immediate goals, this project contributes to the broader discourse on sustainable development by proposing design solutions that integrate public spaces with natural ecosystems. It strives to instill a strong sense of responsibility in the community to protect the space for generations to come. By addressing both ecological and social dimensions, the project not only improves the quality of life in Carrara but also offers a replicable model for other cities with similar challenges. This ultimately helps create a more resilient public space that can adapt to future challenges while fostering a stronger connection between the community and its environment.

Abstract
This ultimately helps create a more resilient public space that can adapt to future challenges while fostering a stronger connection between the community and its environment.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
