When a storm swept through Milan in the summer of 2023, thousands trees were severely damaged overnight, including important botanical resources in the historic gardens. The Giardini Pubblici Milano (Giardini di Porta Venezia), the first open park to the public in the history of Milan, suffered heavy losses in this storm. The legibility of the historical layout was made even more unreadable by the loss of the botanical layers. In response to extreme weather disaster, reorganising resources, planning layouts and improving management is an urgent necessity. We believe that a sustainable conservation and management strategy is essential. In this project we will study the history and current situation of Giardini Pubblici Milano and propose a sustainable conservation and management proposal that reconnecting with the past and rooting for the future through our proposals.
Quando nell'estate del 2023 una tempesta si abbatté su Milano, migliaia di alberi furono gravemente danneggiati durante la notte, comprese importanti risorse botaniche nei giardini storici. I Giardini Pubblici Milano (Giardini di Porta Venezia), il primo parco aperto al pubblico nella storia di Milano, subirono pesanti perdite durante la tempesta. La leggibilità dell'impianto storico è stata resa ancora più illeggibile dalla perdita degli strati botanici. In risposta a un disastro meteorologico estremo, riorganizzare le risorse, pianificare gli allestimenti e migliorare la gestione è una necessità urgente. Riteniamo che una strategia di conservazione e gestione sostenibile sia essenziale. In questo progetto studieremo la storia e la situazione attuale dei Giardini Pubblici di Milano e proporremo una proposta di conservazione e gestione sostenibile che si ricolleghi al passato e si radichi nel futuro attraverso le nostre proposte.

Descrizione: The project panels mainly includes historical context analysis, historical evolution, landscape architecture analysis, botanical analysis, and critical analysis of historical, ecological and social aspects of Giardini Pubblici in Milan. Based on the analysis, we have proposed proposals for garden management and conservation in the context of global climate change, as well as intervention design proposals for five historical nodes.
