Known as the ‘breadbasket region’, the Alentejo sustains villages that substantially depend on agriculture, livestock, and forestry. It could be said that for decades, this land has fed not only itself, but a great part of Europe. The hands of the producers belong to people living in Mértola and its surrounding villages. They are kind, hard-working people, with a great vision of sustainable ways in which to do their jobs. Based on ancestral knowledge in the fields of agriculture, these villages have started initiatives surrounding the topic of agriculture production, food distribution, and food education and conscience. Initiatives such as Tierra Sintrópica, led in the city of Mértola, have opened opportunities for local farmers to explore their own vision of what they are taking from the land to their plates. The goal of this project proposal is to transform the entire area into an auto-sustainable community in which people can rely on each other for their well-being. From local gardens, to farmlands, to a distribution system that balances overproduction, a masterplan has been generated in the regional scale. As part of the taken initiative for educating people in sustainable and conscious agricultural practices, in the architectural scale, both a food academy and a community kitchen have been designed in Mértola. Finally, the photographic report intends to show the villages’ atmospheric value, taking into consideration its relationship to people’s life and work.
Conosciuta come la "regione del granaio", l'Alentejo sostiene villaggi che dipendono sostanzialmente dall'agricoltura, dall'allevamento e dalla silvicoltura. Si potrebbe dire che per decenni questa terra ha nutrito non solo se stessa, ma gran parte dell'Europa. Le mani dei produttori appartengono alle persone che vivono a Mértola e nei villaggi circostanti. Sono persone gentili e laboriose, con una grande visione di modi sostenibili in cui svolgere il proprio lavoro. Sulla base di conoscenze ancestrali nei campi dell'agricoltura, questi villaggi hanno avviato iniziative incentrate sul tema della produzione agricola, della distribuzione alimentare, dell'educazione e della coscienza alimentare. Iniziative come Tierra Sintrópica, nella città di Mértola, hanno aperto opportunità per gli agricoltori locali di esplorare la propria visione di ciò che stanno prendendo dalla terra e portandola ai loro piatti. L'obiettivo di questa proposta di progetto è trasformare l'intera area in una comunità autosostenibile in cui le persone possono contare l'una sull'altra per il proprio benessere. Dagli orti locali, ai terreni agricoli, a un sistema di distribuzione che bilancia la sovrapproduzione, è stato generato un piano generale su scala regionale. Come parte dell'iniziativa intrapresa per educare le persone a pratiche agricole sostenibili e consapevoli, su scala architettonica, sono state progettate a Mértola sia un'accademia alimentare che una cucina comunitaria. Infine, il reportage fotografico intende mostrare il valore atmosferico dei villaggi, tenendo conto della sua relazione con la vita e il lavoro delle persone.
