This thesis examines the evolution of Sudanese Nubian vernacular architecture, exploring the profound changes it has undergone due to historical, social, political, environmental and economic forces such as displacement due to Dam overflow, colonization, self-colonization, and the influence of modern problem-solving approaches. By analyzing traditional architectural practices alongside contemporary adaptations, the research examines how these changes in space psychology have affected Sudanese Nubian communities, particularly regarding human interaction with each other, with spaces, light, and olfactory stimuli. The study emphasises the psychological and cultural significance of these elements, revealing their critical role in shaping mindsets, people’s future, fostering comfort and maintaining social relationships within a culturally supportive environment. In addition, the thesis examines sustainable building materials, construction and ventilation methods used in Sudanese architecture, highlighting their relevance in contemporary design and in parallel with the current need of reconstruction after massive wartime destruction, with limited resources. Through a multidisciplinary approach, the research provides insights into how these sustainable practices not only address environmental and economical challenges, but also could strengthen the cultural identity as well as community cohesion. The findings highlight the importance of integrating traditional knowledge with modern innovation to create spaces that are both sustainable and psychologically resonant, and contribute to the ongoing dialogue about the future of architectural practice in Sudan and similar contexts. It proposes a design that aims to integrate contemporary lifestyles with Sudanese Nubian culture and traditions, reflecting a society that cherishes communal gatherings and celebrations. In Sudan, people often come together, whether there’s an occasion or not, celebrating every moment of joy or sorrow in life. The proposal also explores the impact of spatial connectivity, shapes, and volumes on social relationships, personality development, and mental well-being. Additionally, it considers how material choices influence mood, proposing the use of simple, yet effective materials to create environments that support mental health.
