OMNIA Community Hub: The Regeneration of the Via Vertunni Complex

This thesis project has concentrated its efforts on the renovation of the Vertunni Complex, an abandoned primary school building left only with the existing structure in reinforced concrete without fillings. The building, located in the historic Via Collatina of the Rome’s neighbourhood called La Rustica, offers a great opportunity to provide the area with quality spaces and to serve those who live and work within the neighbourhood. After a precise investigation of the population country, habits and age the function of the building has been chosen, deciding to create the design of a community hub accessible to all citizens during the day. The presence of a new community hub can enhance the attitude toward activities resolving issues of La Rustica neighbourhood regarding the lack of sport, cultural and community-diversity enhancing activities. For this reason, the building has been divided in three zones, including a sport area with a gym and a multipurpose sport court, an education area with some classrooms dedicated to music, art and language, a third area to implement social activities for community such us cooperative gardening in the greenhouse. Particular attention has been posed to sustainability during the design, implementing passive and active strategies to reduce drastically the electricity consumption while promoting daylight and natural ventilation. In addition, the envelope has been projected maintaining the original structure in reinforce concrete and adding insulation to achieve good performances both in summer and winter avoiding thermal bridges. Addition to the original structure have been made in glue laminated timber (glulam) which guarantee lightness and sustainability.

Questo progetto di tesi ha concentrato i suoi sforzi sulla ristrutturazione del Complesso Vertunni, un edificio scolastico elementare abbandonato, rimasto solo con la struttura esistente in cemento armato senza riempimenti. L'edificio, situato nella storica Via Collatina del quartiere romano chiamato La Rustica, offre una grande opportunità per fornire all'area spazi di qualità e per servire coloro che vivono e lavorano nel quartiere. Dopo un'indagine precisa del paese, delle abitudini e dell'età della popolazione, è stata scelta la funzione dell'edificio, decidendo di creare il design di un centro comunitario accessibile a tutti i cittadini durante il giorno. La presenza di un nuovo centro comunitario può migliorare l'atteggiamento verso le attività che risolvono i problemi del quartiere La Rustica riguardanti la mancanza di attività sportive, culturali e di miglioramento della diversità della comunità. Per questo motivo, l'edificio è stato diviso in tre zone, tra cui un'area sportiva con una palestra e un campo sportivo polivalente, un'area educativa con alcune aule dedicate a musica, arte e lingua, una terza area per implementare attività sociali per la comunità come il giardinaggio cooperativo nella serra. Particolare attenzione è stata posta alla sostenibilità durante la progettazione, implementando strategie passive e attive per ridurre drasticamente il consumo di elettricità, promuovendo al contempo la luce naturale e la ventilazione naturale. Inoltre, l'involucro è stato progettato mantenendo la struttura originale in cemento armato e aggiungendo isolamento per ottenere buone prestazioni sia in estate che in inverno evitando ponti termici. Le aggiunte alla struttura originale sono state realizzate in legno lamellare incollato (glulam) che garantiscono leggerezza e sostenibilità.
