The transition of industrial production in Osijek, Slavonia's administrative and economic center, began in the middle of the 19th century. The city on the Drava River, a crucial geographical advantage, systematically developed its industry with its favorable transportation position and the tradition of craftsmanship and trade. The 1990s were challenging for Osijek as the city faced new challenges during its economic transition. After the war, the town went through privatization, the shutdown of essential industries, and a drop in population. The impact of this decline is still seen today in the city’s most significant industrial sites, as once home to large companies, which are now neglected ruins. To start solving the issue of these spaces, it’s crucial to understand the history of the factories, which can help justify future investment and revitalization. After examining industries' historical development and current state, the thesis explores their potential for renewal by focusing on their cultural and architectural value. The former Match factory proposal strives to maintain the place's local identity. The project aims to create a “city within a city” by adding new functions and amenities that were previously missing. The goal is to make a space that welcomes everyone, encourages interaction, and integrates people into architecture. Shared in-between spaces encourage social interaction and the exchange of experiences between different generations, from children to the elderly. The architectural approach returns the memory of one of the most essential architectural influences: the traditional Slavonian house. The project becomes a contemporary reinterpretation by harmonizing with the surroundings and referring to the local history and tradition. Another essential topic of the thesis is the common issue of an aging population, a constant global challenge in Osijek. As people age, they become less physically and socially active, harming their health and well-being. This thesis suggests new housing strategies to help older residents become more involved in their communities, aiming to reconnect them with their social environment.
