As a symbol of industrial prominence and maritime importance, as well as home to Europe's busiest port, Rotterdam thrives on international trade and innovation. However, with global shifts in progress, the city faces the challenge of reshaping its urban landscape while preserving its industrial legacy. This thesis examines the transformative potential of an Innovation District as an urban catalyst in Rotterdam's southern region, an area that appears both morphologically and socio-economically disconnected from its northern counterpart across the river. The narrative outlines clear guidelines that shape a masterplan for the new Innovation District, which aims to weave together the heterogeneous threads of industry, research, education, and technology. It promotes diversification of functions through the introduction of key activators designed to draw and channel people flows toward the southern area of the city. One of these pivotal activators is the Innovation Complex+, a tech campus that draws upon the raw industrial character of its location. This complex does not merely coexist with its surroundings - it embraces them, integrating laboratories, start-ups, and educational facilities into the area's industrial context. Leveraging its proximity to these active zones, the Innovation Complex+ attracts global talent and nurtures local expertise, cultivating a distinctive ecosystem where theoretical research meets practical application. The co-location of an engineering-focused educational facility, a start-up business incubator, and a creative hub with workshop spaces fosters an environment where professionals collaborate and advance their respective fields. By exploring the interplay of these functions, the study highlights the potential for interdisciplinary growth in the educational and entrepreneurial landscape. Another crucial aspect is the dual-level design, which facilitates interaction across two distinct public realms. A street level, which connects the cluster with the urban fabric, and a lower water level that links it to the marina. This duality is echoed in both the outdoor spaces and interior layouts, bridging the district with the Maas River. This thesis aims to assert the Innovation Complex+ as something far beyond a mere tech campus - it aims to show its potential of being a blueprint for sustainable urban regeneration. By interweaving education, industry, and innovation, it establishes a self-sustaining cycle of growth and development. As Rotterdam navigates the 21st century, the Innovation Complex+ stands as a beacon, illuminating a path where industrial heritage and technological advancement can merge to forge a vibrant, resilient urban future.
