With the arrival of the new millennium 20th century theatres and cinemas become of historical and architectural interest since they have reached the age to be included in the cultural heritage. Working on these buildings represents an essential part of contemporary architectural restoration, but it still presents cultural, ethical and practical difficulties. This research highlights how the theoretical debate lacks a structured and coherent methodology: current operating methods allow actions that may even lead to alteration or radical transformation of these buildings. There is a pressing need to engage with this recent architecture, which is a crucial element of our culture–a result of a collective memory that continues to identify with it–and to enhance interest in its preservation. The thesis aims to emphasize the need for correct and coherent methodologies and techniques in relation to what already exists. In based of these considerations, the research–starting from both historical and technical aspects–has enabled reflections on possible actions for the preservation of these historical buildings, focusing particularly on the architectural-acoustic elements that characterize them. With its five chapters the thesis deals with various themes, presenting different case studies with their technical solutions developed at the execution level. Specifically, Chapter 1 describes the theatrical heritage as a cultural asset, while Chapter 2 provides a brief chronology of the birth and the evolution of the typological definition of theatres and cinemas, referring to the period between the 19th and 20th centuries. Chapter 3 presents an architectural-constructive reading of contemporary manuals and specialized magazines that informed the construction of cine-theaters, deepening the research towards design, acoustic and construction themes. Chapter 4 illustrates the intervention guidelines based on the ideal decomposition of the architectural elements that constitute the building according to the technological units that compose it. Finally, Chapter 5 examines the technical solutions through four case studies concerning theaters Sondrio, Legnano, Suzzara, and Concordia
