Paris, known as the “City of Light,” exemplifies the deep connection between urban planning and societal change. From the iconic boulevards of the Haussmann era to today’s sustainable development initiatives, the city’s landscape reflects layers of historical, social, and political influences. This thesis undertakes a comprehensive journey through the evolution of Parisian urban planning from the 19th century to today and looks ahead to future plans, with a focus on how these strategies have both shaped and been shaped by societal dynamics. The research builds on a thorough review of historical records, urban plans, and academic studies, complemented by on-the-ground observation and advanced GIS mapping techniques. Living, working, and studying in Paris provided firsthand insights that, along with GIS technology, helped visualize the city’s transformation over time, capturing the motivations, strategies, impacts of pivotal planning efforts and uncovering the societal values, ideologies, and power structures behind these transformative projects. The study includes case studies as snapshots of distinct periods or projects that reveal broader themes and trends in Parisian urban planning. Alongside empirical analysis, the thesis integrates personal reflection, drawing on the author’s background in architectural design and history, to bridge theory and practice in urban planning, enriching the analysis with personal insights. This thesis offers a layered exploration of Paris’s urban planning evolution, linking historical roots with modern realities aiming to provide insights for urban planners, policymakers, and scholars.

Abstract
This thesis offers a layered exploration of Paris’s urban planning evolution, linking historical roots with modern realities aiming to provide insights for urban planners, policymakers, and scholars.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
