Colombian architecture and its authors represent a distant and still little-explored field for us Italians. The idea of bringing to Italy a first monograph on the life and work of one of Colombia's leading figures of the 20th century stems from a desire to enrich our architectural imagination and references with works and narratives that remain almost entirely unknown. The critical stance of this architect toward the Modern Movement—alongside his application of its principles within a tropical context—offers us universally valuable responses to issues that have historically been broad and global, transcending national boundaries. To understand the phenomena surrounding Rogelio Salmona, we have taken the approach of analyzing recent publications about his work and the context in which he operated, as well as the specialized journals that documented, from the 1940s up until his death, the modernization of the country. Numerous faculty members from the Universidad Nacional were involved, contributing interviews and valuable historical information. Over time and through study, the complexities of this figure emerged, along with a notable scarcity of critical literature—both on Salmona himself and on the broader processes by which international architectural languages were adopted during the 20th century. A true "Salmona movement," which exalts the architect as the sole authentic interpreter of Colombian identity, has overshadowed other dynamics and interpreters, creating a canonical narrative that is rarely questioned. With this awareness, these conditions served as a starting point for a critical and detached perspective, distancing itself from mere celebration and aiming to redefine the figure for what he was, going against the norm by questioning him: studying his influences, professors, travels, the architects who surrounded him, his writings, and his transcribed oral testimonies, ultimately arriving at independent conclusions. Revisiting Rogelio Salmona should serve as a prompt for a broader reexamination of Colombian architectural history—a vast and rich network of actors who, perhaps due to geographic marginality or a lack of historical focus, have yet to receive the recognition they deserve.

Abstract
Revisiting Rogelio Salmona should serve as a prompt for a broader reexamination of Colombian architectural history—a vast and rich network of actors who, perhaps due to geographic marginality or a lack of historical focus, have yet to receive the recognition they deserve.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
