Simplon Idrolab : trasformazione dell'ex Birrificio Sempione di Verbania in un nuovo centro per la coltivazione idroponica

The Sempione Brewery is one of the many artefacts of industrial archaeology in the Verbania area, once called “the Manchester of Lake Maggiore” for its flourishing manufacturing activity that attracted workers from all over Italy. The original plant consisted of a monastery, which was suppressed during the Napoleonic era. The industrial complex was converted into a silk factory and then a pasta factory, which suffered a fire in the early 20th century. In the 1940s, the Master Plan for the newly formed city of Verbania envisaged urban expansion in the area affected by the plant, calling into question its continued existence. Currently the brewery, consisting of various heterogeneous elements and abandoned for fifty years, is located in a residential area, so its redevelopment appears necessary. The design action will be rooted in the centuries-old history of the complex, involving the context and the presence of water as a primary element of life and development. It is precisely water that will be a pivotal theme for the project, in fact right inside the area there are two wells, one used since the time of the monastery and the other opened in later times and used to produce a beer of excellent quality and exported throughout Italy, in recent years marketed as Simplon Bier. These are just some of the considerations that will lead to the development of the project and that will require a deep knowledge of the existing artefact. The intervention focuses on the desire to make the area attractive by bringing in a new centre dedicated to hydroponics that will interweave its roots with the activities taking place in the social and natural context in the city, not forgetting history and taking nourishment from it for the project, entitled Simplon Idrolab.

Il Birrificio Sempione è uno dei tanti manufatti di archeologia industriale presenti nel territorio di Verbania, una volta denominata “la Manchester del Lago Maggiore” per la sua florida attività manifatturiera che richiamava manodopera da tutta Italia. L’impianto originale era costituito da un monastero, soppresso in epoca napoleonica. Il complesso industriale fu trasformato in un setificio e poi in un pastificio, che subì un incendio agli inizi del Novecento. Negli anni Quaranta del XX secolo il Piano Regolatore per la neonata città di Verbania previde l’espansione urbana nel settore interessato dall’impianto, mettendone in discussione il mantenimento. Attualmente il birrificio, costituito da diversi elementi eterogenei e abbandonato ormai da cinquant’anni, si trova in una zona residenziale, per cui appare necessaria una sua riqualificazione. L’azione progettuale vuole porre le sue radici nella storia plurisecolare del complesso, che coinvolge il contesto e la presenza dell’acqua come elemento primario di vita e di sviluppo. Proprio l’acqua sarà un tema cardine per il progetto, infatti proprio all’interno dell’area sono presenti due pozzi, uno utilizzato fin dai tempi del monastero e l’altro aperto in epoca successiva e utilizzato per produrre una birra di ottima qualità ed esportata in tutta Italia, negli ultimi anni commercializzata come Simplon Bier. Queste sono solo alcune delle considerazioni che porteranno allo sviluppo del progetto e che richiederanno la profonda conoscenza del manufatto esistente. L’intervento si concentra sulla volontà di rendere l’area attrattiva, portando al suo interno un nuovo polo dedicato all’idrocoltura che intrecci le sue radici con le attività che avvengono nel contesto sociale e naturalistico in città, non dimenticando la storia e prendendone da essa il nutrimento per il progetto, intitolato Simplon Idrolab.
