Rotterdam South is undergoing a transformative renewal, evolving into a vibrant hub for education, culture, and innovation within the broader context of the city’s ambitious redevelopment plans. Previously defined by industrial isolation and socio-economic challenges, the area is now envisioned as a cohesive urban landscape where architectural ingenuity meets natural integration. The municipality of Rotterdam has mainly driven this significant transformation, assisted by the architectural firm Mecanoo, located in Delft. United, they aim to overcome the social and physical gap between the Noord and Zuid of the city by transforming the South into a hub for education, residence, employment, and innovation. An important aspect of this vision focuses on the significant role of educational environments in sparking change, achieved through partnerships with prominent educational institutions in or around Rotterdam’s city center like Erasmus University, Hogeschool, Codarts, RASL, TU Delft, as well as smaller entities such as high schools, startups, and cultural advocates. Following an extensive examination of Rotterdam’s present urban conditions and utilizing the Manifesto for Rotterdam Zuid by Mecanoo, it has been identified that a well-defined structure is vital for rejuvenating the city. Out of all the phases that have been laid out, the topic of this thesis has been selected: it investigates the Cultuur & Campus project in Maashaven, emphasizing its role in creating multifaceted spaces that combine academic pursuits with community engagement. The research delves into the architectural and urban strategies that redefine public spaces, making Cultuur & Campus a central civic node. Through multifunctional platforms and adaptable structures, the campus caters to diverse stakeholders, fostering collaboration and cultural exchange. Positioned at the Maashaven waterfront, the project elegantly bridges historical industrial elements with forward-looking sustainable practices. By exploring typological innovations, structural efficiency, and forward-thinking architectural strategies, the thesis presents Cultuur & Campus as an exemplary model for modern urban design. The work illustrates how integrated architectural approaches can foster social cohesion and elevate the role of academic and cultural institutions in the urban landscape, offering a blueprint for future regeneration efforts.

Abstract
The work illustrates how integrated architectural approaches can foster social cohesion and elevate the role of academic and cultural institutions in the urban landscape, offering a blueprint for future regeneration efforts.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
