Cancer neoplasia is one of the most widespread diseases with the highest mortality rate nowadays. One of the technologies and treatments to be applied to eradicate cancer is radiotherapy. This specific treatment involves the delivery of ionizing beams, X-rays, for therapeutic purposes. Such radiation is emitted, in the external beam treatment, by an equipment called linear accelerator. This device, among its various components, is equipped with a gantry which is primarily responsible for the delivery and modulation of the beam which, during treatment, adapts to the morphology of the tumor to be as incisive as possible while causing as few side effects to the healthy tissues surrounding the target. ASST Valle Olona, having to replace the previous linear accelerator as it was no longer performing well, participated in a Framework Agreement in order to install and purchase such equipment with funds from the Piano Nazionale Ripresa e Resilienza (PNRR) with in addition the dosimetry systems and Surface Guided RadioTherapy systems to enable an even more high-performance service. The PNRR funds are those earmarked for Mission 6 “Health” and specifically for Component 2 and 'Investment 1.1 - Modernization of the hospital technology and digital stock. Included in the investment, the acquisition of large equipment was provided for the entire national territory, including also the linear accelerators (LinAc). The LinAc model TrueBeam installed in the presidium of Saronno is provided by Varian company. Being one of the highest performing and most innovative on the market, the LinAc model TrueBeam has made it possible to deliver higher performance and more comprehensive and innovative services to the patients in the catchment area of the Saronno hospital presidium.
