This thesis investigates the adoption of Open Innovation Strategies in the Turkish innovation ecosystem. Open Innovation has emerged during last years as a critical paradigm for the need of generating innovation using both internal and external knowledge, which is the only way to gain a long-term competitive advantage in today’s competitive landscape. The current global competition challenges even the largest corporations with the most comprehensive internal resources to independently conduct all tasks within their four walls. This research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of this paradigm by empirically investigating how this strategy is adopted by innovative companies. Since most recent studies in the literature generally focus on the practical knowledge of Europe, this study contributes by presenting the status of Open Innovation practices in an emerging market, Türkiye. Specifically, this study focuses on three main areas, which are how Turkish firms engage in inbound and outbound Open Innovation activities, what are the enablers and barriers to Open Innovation, and how do companies within the Turkish innovation ecosystem establish strategic partnerships during the adoption of Open Innovation. To address these questions, the interview questions were designed based on the qualitative approach as a primary data collection method, and the data were collected through in-depth interviews with four Turkish companies. These firms were selected based on their strategic importance in the Turkish innovation ecosystem and their involvement in innovation practices. The result of the Empirical Analysis reflects that although Open Innovation is tailored according to different strategies and needs in each company, Startup Programs stand out as the most dominant Open Innovation activity for all companies. Furthermore, the innovation ecosystem, idea-sharing platforms of companies, and top management play the most significant role as enablers of this paradigm, while the human factor and the lack of time and resources are the most dominant barriers to Open Innovation. Meanwhile, for the third question, startups are preferred as a dominant strategic partner option for all companies.
