This work shows a thesis that critically explores the role of service in the field of rotating electrical machines. Starting with a broad, general analysis, I developed a path that cul- minates in a concrete case study at the ABB Vittuone facility. The goal of this thesis is to assess how the wealth of technical knowledge acquired in the past can still provide significant value today, enhancing the quality and efficiency of service in an increasingly digitalized industry. I conducted an in-depth study of large electric motors and generators, and by actively working within an excellent field service environment like ABB Vittuone, I sought to ap- ply all the knowledge acquired in this field. In this thesis, I have outlined general guidelines to help achieve a more comprehensive understanding of the sector, the context in which it operates, the activities involved and, above all, the skills and resources required to provide quality service for these complex products. I extend my best wishes to those who will turn the pages of this thesis: as they will discover through their reading and as I was often reminded during these six months, in the world of rotating machinery service, "One never stops learning."
Con questo lavoro presento una tesi che esplora in modo critico il ruolo del service nel settore delle macchine elettriche rotanti. Partendo da un’analisi macro e generale, ho sviluppato un percorso che culmina in un caso di studio concreto presso lo stabilimento ABB di Vittuone. L’obiettivo di questa tesi è valutare come il patrimonio di conoscenze tecniche acquisite in passato possa ancora oggi rappresentare un valore significativo, elevando la qualità e l’efficienza del servizio in un’industria sempre più digitalizzata. Ho condotto un approfondito studio sui grandi motori elettrici e generatori e, lavorando attivamente in un field service d’eccellenza come quello di ABB Vittuone, ho cercato di applicare tutte le conoscenze acquisite in questo settore. In questa tesi ho tracciato linee guida generali per facilitare una comprensione più com- pleta del settore, del contesto in cui opera, delle attività svolte e, soprattutto, delle compe- tenze e delle risorse necessarie per offrire un service di qualità su questi prodotti complessi. Desidero rivolgere un augurio a chi sfoglierà queste pagine: come scoprirà nel corso della lettura, e come mi è stato spesso ripetuto durante questi sei mesi, nel mondo del service delle macchine rotanti non si smette mai di imparare.
