This thesis investigates the state of sustainability within the Italian furniture sector, a field marked by its reliance on raw materials, significant environmental impact, and a predominance of small to medium-sized, often family-owned, enterprises. Despite increasing regulatory pressure and shifting consumer expectations towards eco-friendly practices, existing literature has largely focused on broader global industries or specific, narrow aspects of sustainability, lacking an integrated, ecosystem-wide analysis. This study seeks to fill that gap by examining the primary drivers and barriers influencing sustainable practices and exploring strategies for overcoming these challenges through an ecosystem perspective. The research employs a qualitative methodology, including comprehensive literature review and case study analyses of ten Italian furniture companies, enriched by insights from industry association FederlegnoArredo. Findings reveal that while legislative requirements and managerial environmental concern drive sustainability, companies face significant barriers such as resource limitations, lack of competencies, and complexity of implementation. Notably, smaller suppliers often struggle to meet sustainability standards without external support, highlighting the importance of collaboration. While some firms adopt innovative practices, the prevalent focus remains on incremental improvements, such as material recycling and product certifications, rather than transformative business model shifts. This thesis underscores the critical role of collaboration between ecosystem actors, including suppliers, research institutions, and associations, to foster shared knowledge and enable the adoption of sustainable practices. The practical implications highlight the need for targeted training, development of innovation platforms, and strengthened advocacy networks to support companies in overcoming sustainability challenges. Theoretically, this study enriches the understanding of sustainability within an ecosystem context, demonstrating how interactions among diverse actors shape sustainability outcomes. These insights provide a foundation for future research, particularly on the integration of digital tools and the long-term effects of evolving policies on SMEs, contributing to a more comprehensive framework for sustainable development in the sector.

Abstract
These insights provide a foundation for future research, particularly on the integration of digital tools and the long-term effects of evolving policies on SMEs, contributing to a more comprehensive framework for sustainable development in the sector.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
