The increasingly rapid and radical changes occurring worldwide introduce profound considerations into our lives and work regarding ethics, the environment, and the social, political, and economic conditions in which we will live. These changes make it progressively complex to understand how to respond, necessitating not only adaptation but also proactive engagement to steer the future in a desired direction - the challenge is to do so responsibly while maintaining growth and innovation. In order to face increasingly volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) futures, individuals and organisations, and especially design teams, must develop future-making skills, conducting inquiries that proactively seek out possibilities rather than passively awaiting their emergence. This thesis explores how a Design Futures approach can facilitate responsible organisational change by equipping design teams to anticipate and address complex, uncertain challenges and contribute to ethically grounded innovation. The study investigates the transformative potential of Design Futures through three core inquiries: theoretical research, framework development, and application within an organisational empirical study. The first phase examines how Design Futures can drive change, and what kind of change should be pursued, coming up with the critical concept of responsibility. The second phase introduces the concept of Responsible Futuring, and dives into organisational change. The findings are summed up in a framework, identified in the 3 key concepts: Reflect, Recenter, and React - empowering designers to align personal values with organisational goals, cultivating shared accountability toward a sustainable future. For practical validation, the framework is applied within Cerved Group S.p.A., a leading Italian data and financial services company. Here, the Responsible Futuring framework is integrated into design processes through participatory workshops with nine designers, each lasting 1.5 hours. Data collection involved participant observation, session recordings, and feedback forms, enabling a thematic analysis to identify patterns in designers’ perspectives and actions before and after applying the framework. These insights, coupled with participants’ feedback, informed refinements to the framework to enhance its practical applicability. The findings underscore the potential for design teams to become proactive agents of responsible change, influencing both organisational and societal futures. The empirical study within Cerved demonstrates the practical benefits of integrating Responsible Futuring into established design practices, showing its potential for ethical influence across various organisational contexts. The thesis concludes by advocating for the importance of proactive engagement, which needs to be implemented in a systemic and structured manner, requiring an examination of established practices within design teams to identify opportunities for seamless integration with futuring methodologies. The ultimate goal is to bring about organisational change and promote the importance of responsible futuring.

Abstract
These insights, coupled with participants’ feedback, informed refinements to the framework to enhance its practical applicability. The findings underscore the potential for design teams to become proactive agents of responsible change, influencing both organisational and societal futures.
