In a world where Diabetes is rapidly increasing, the need to address the issue of disease management has become evident, both to improve the quality of patients’ life and to provide concrete support to the increasingly overburdened Healthcare System. A key solution to address these challenges is the Involvement of patients in care: Engagement in disease management promotes an increase in patient autonomy and a reduction in the burden on the healthcare system. This study aims to explore how to facilitate Patient Engagement in Diabetes, with the objective of providing Healthcare Professionals with a compendium of levers to stimulate involvement. The research began with a Systematic Literature Review in order to investigate how the Patient Engagement process is currently implemented. The analysis suggested various information regarding Reliable Facilitating Factors. However, it also revealed a fragmentation of current processes, as well as the absence of a formal list of Factors to be adopted. To fill these gaps, an Empirical Analysis based on 26 interviews with Healthcare Professionals from various diabetes Italian centres was conducted to understand the adoption of Patient Engagement in practical cases. By comparing the empirical results with the data emerging from the Literature, it was possible to develop two frameworks: the first contains a set of Factors that professionals can use to engage the patient in the different phases of acceptance of the disease, while the second framework structures the activities that professionals could integrate in the clinical practice to engage patients in care. The study offers theoretical and practical contributions. On a theoretical level, it provides further knowledge on the Engagement of Patients with Diabetes, expanding the pre-existing information base. On a practical level, it provides two frameworks, of which one possibly adaptable to other geographic contexts, that facilitate the management of patients with diabetes, opening new research perspectives for the future.

Abstract
On a practical level, it provides two frameworks, of which one possibly adaptable to other geographic contexts, that facilitate the management of patients with diabetes, opening new research perspectives for the future.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
