Stitching the Corso

Starting with a preliminary investigation of Porta Ticinese Street, the first notable observation is that this narrow, historic street is consistently bustling with people. Three main public spaces (Carrobio, Columns of San Lorenzo, piazza San Eustorgio) are highly popular today, in contrast to one vacant area currently used as a car park. The proximity of this void area to the ancient San Eustorgio Church and the Diocesano Museum highlights its potential to become an additional public space on Porta Ticinese Street and connection to the park behind San Lorenzo and San Eustorgio. To determine the shape of a new building, we decided to adhere to the following existing guidelines: - Firstly, the building’s shape is defined by a new square. - Secondly, the existing axes of the surrounding buildings are taken into account. The new project addresses this consideration by aligning with the surrounding axes, bringing all directions together in a circle that establishes the center of the new square. Given that the existing Diocesano Museum primarily functions as a gallery, we decided to follow the same principle. Consequently, the new wing of the museum will also be a gallery, naturally connected to the old part of the museum. In conclusion, the project represents a thoughtful synthesis of its surroundings, aiming to enrich the urban experience through careful consideration of spatial relationships and historical context. Through the creation of a new public square and the extension of the Diocesano Museum, the design seeks to contribute positively to the vibrant life of Porta Ticinese Street, fostering a dynamic environment that celebrates both the past and the present.

Iniziando con un'indagine preliminare su via Porta Ticinese, la prima osservazione significativa è che questa strada stretta e storica è sempre vivace e animata. Tre principali spazi pubblici (Carrobio, Colonne di San Lorenzo, piazza San Eustorgio) sono oggi molto frequentati, a differenza di un'area vuota attualmente adibita a parcheggio. La vicinanza di questa area vuota all'antica chiesa di San Eustorgio e al Museo Diocesano mette in evidenza il suo potenziale per diventare uno spazio pubblico aggiuntivo su via Porta Ticinese e un collegamento con il parco dietro San Lorenzo e San Eustorgio. Per determinare la forma di un nuovo edificio, abbiamo deciso di seguire le seguenti linee guida esistenti: In primo luogo, la forma dell’edificio è definita da una nuova piazza. In secondo luogo, si tengono in considerazione gli assi esistenti degli edifici circostanti. Il nuovo progetto affronta questa considerazione allineandosi con gli assi circostanti, unendo tutte le direzioni in un cerchio che stabilisce il centro della nuova piazza. Considerando che l'attuale Museo Diocesano funziona principalmente come galleria, abbiamo deciso di seguire lo stesso principio. Di conseguenza, la nuova ala del museo sarà anch’essa una galleria, naturalmente collegata alla parte antica del museo. In conclusione, il progetto rappresenta una sintesi attenta del contesto circostante, con l’obiettivo di arricchire l'esperienza urbana attraverso una riflessione accurata sulle relazioni spaziali e sul contesto storico. Con la creazione di una nuova piazza pubblica e l'ampliamento del Museo Diocesano, il design si propone di contribuire positivamente alla vivace vita di via Porta Ticinese, promuovendo un ambiente dinamico che celebra sia il passato che il presente.
