Afra and Tobia Scarpa stand out in the Italian architectural landscape of the late 20th century for the extraordinary quality of theri design achievments and their choice of independence and originality, distancing themselves from the dominant trends of the Modern Movement. Their practice is characterized by a balance between tradition and innovation, craftsmanship and modernity, and a deep attention to the authenticity of materials and the needs of the client. Afra, embodying solid pragmatism, manages relationships with clients and industries, while Tobia, inspired by his Venetian heritage and the influence of his father Carlo Scarpa, has a more fluid and dynamic creativity. Together, they create a synergy that blends aesthetics and functionality without compromise. Despite their success in the field of design, their architectural works, especially regarding domestic interiors, have not received the same critical attention. This thesis aims to fill that gap by thoroughly documenting their career and focusing on their domestic interiors, an aspect of their work deserving special consideration. Through the analysis of eight emblematic projects—ranging from new constructions to restorations and unrealized designs—and extensive research conducted in various archives, the holistic and meticulous approach of the duo is brought to light, revealing how each project reflects a comprehensive concept of living. For the Scarpa, a home is not merely a place to live in, but an environment that must meet the most intimate human needs, offering a living experience that transcends pure functionality. Light, materials, landscape and details take center stage in a vision that embraces the entirety of the living experience, creating a synthesis between beauty and comfort.

Afra e Tobia Scarpa si distinguono nel panorama architettonico italiano del secondo Novecento per la straordinaria qualità degli esiti progettuali raggiunti e per la loro scelta di indipendenza e originalità, lontani dalle tendenze dominanti del Movimento moderno. La loro pratica è caratterizzata da un equilibrio tra tradizione e innovazione, artigianalità e modernità e un’attenzione profonda per l’autenticità dei materiali e le esigenze dell’utente. Afra, rappresentante di una solida pragmaticità, cura i rapporti con i committenti e le industrie, mentre Tobia, ispirato dalla sua eredità veneziana e dall’influenza del padre Carlo Scarpa, esprime una creatività fluida e irruente. Insieme, creano una sinergia che fonde estetica e funzionalità senza compromessi. Nonostante la loro notorietà nel campo del design, le loro architetture, specialmente per quanto riguarda gli interni domestici, non hanno ricevuto la stessa attenzione critica. La tesi mira a colmare questa lacuna, documentando in modo approfondito la loro carriera e concentrandosi sugli interni domestici, un ambito del loro lavoro che merita una particolare considerazione. Attraverso l’analisi di otto progetti emblematici – che spaziano tra nuove costruzioni, restauri e progetti non realizzati – e un’approfondita ricerca condotta in diversi archivi, si mette in luce il loro approccio olistico e meticoloso, evidenziando come ogni progetto rifletta una concezione integrale dell’abitare. Per gli Scarpa, la casa non è semplicemente un luogo abitato, ma un ambiente che deve rispondere ai bisogni umani più intimi, offrendo un’esperienza abitativa che vada oltre la pura funzionalità. La luce, i materiali, il paesaggio e i dettagli diventano protagonisti in una visione che abbraccia la totalità dell’esperienza abitativa, creando una sintesi tra bellezza e comfort.
