If we accept the fact that “house”, more than any other built typologies, has been able to respond to the transformations of human needs and social changes, then, it is vital to understand how it could perform such a task in our current times and contexts. The house in this regard, constitutes the primary element of the human built environment was well as they fundamental need for “shelter.” This thesis first analyzes architectural responses to contemporary society's ever-changing needs within the domestic realm. The locus of research is based on the Milanese houses of the twentieth century, which, created by the renowned architects/practitioners who shaped the design culture in those decades, constitute a heritage of inexhaustible resources. The research initiates by providing insights into the evolution of domestic spaces through a set of comparative samples of case studies. The selected cases are divided into ordinary houses intended for the middle class that prioritize functionality and extraordinary houses that showcase more true art forms. This phase aims to provide a reference abacus of interior architectural design solutions that can offer housing configurations to support future design experiments. Furthermore, to better understand new housing needs, the research analyzes contemporary sociological and environmental issues of the city of Milan within an integrative appendix. In order to implement the theoretical study, eight housing units are investigated in the design section of the research. These units, intended for the middle class, could respond to contemporary needs by satisfying four different ways of inhabiting domestic forms: living alone, living as a couple, living together in the family unit, and shared living. Each category of family unit is represented by two projects: the first is based on a common matrix that respects the practicality and functionality needs of “typical” tenants, while the second is developed according to certain desires of specific tenants customized through innovative expedients and singular design solutions. The thesis does not set out to reach any definitive conclusions but represents an operational matrix, a process of reflection that deliberately leaves the field of design possibilities open. The research invites us to rethink the concept of living for the middle class in an innovative and accessible way. It is not just a matter of optimizing space, but of providing housing that promotes well-being, sociality and personalization, while remaining within the reach of the majority.

Abstract
It is not just a matter of optimizing space, but of providing housing that promotes well-being, sociality and personalization, while remaining within the reach of the majority.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
