Solar refrigeration has gained traction in the last decades for several reasons. It is a promising technology that meets the growing needs of refrigeration for food and crops, vaccines, and medicine conservation in sub-Saharan Africa and part of Asia without increasing greenhouse gas emissions in the environment. These rural areas lack reliable connections to the electrical grid and the high operating costs of traditional refrigerators. Solar refrigeration offers a sustainable and practical solution to the challenges of food preservation and food security in developing countries, while also contributing to the empowerment of local communities, stimulating economic development and promoting environmental sustainability. This work provides a technical and economical comparison of existing solar cooling approaches, including both thermally and electrically driven, while also mentioning recent studies that focus on converting conventional refrigerators into solar refrigerators in rural areas on a small scale. A comparison of the different aspects of each technology, its applications and environmental impacts is provided, while also adding a guideline for the proper selection of these technologies, with recommendations for future research and development to stimulate broader acceptance of solar cooling.
La refrigerazione solare ha guadagnato terreno negli ultimi decenni per diversi motivi. È una tecnologia promettente che soddisfa le crescenti esigenze di refrigerazione per alimenti e colture, vaccini e conservazione di medicinali nell'Africa subsahariana e in parte dell'Asia senza aumentare le emissioni di gas serra nell'ambiente. Queste aree rurali non dispongono di connessioni affidabili alla rete elettrica e non hanno gli elevati costi operativi dei frigoriferi tradizionali. La refrigerazione solare offre una soluzione sostenibile e pratica alle sfide della conservazione e della sicurezza alimentare nei paesi in via di sviluppo, contribuendo anche all'emancipazione delle comunità locali, stimolando lo sviluppo economico e promuovendo la sostenibilità ambientale. Questo lavoro fornisce un confronto tecnico ed economico degli attuali approcci di raffreddamento solare, inclusi quelli azionati termicamente ed elettricamente, menzionando anche studi recenti che si concentrano sulla conversione di frigoriferi convenzionali in frigoriferi solari nelle aree rurali su piccola scala. Viene fornito un confronto dei diversi aspetti di ciascuna tecnologia, delle sue applicazioni e degli impatti ambientali, aggiungendo anche una linea guida per la corretta selezione di queste tecnologie, con raccomandazioni per la futura ricerca e sviluppo per stimolare una più ampia accettazione del raffreddamento solare.
